A Journey From Blogger to WordPress (part 2)

The first part of this series was about purchasing my domain names. HERE

I was so excited, I was one of the "Cool Kids!" Then I met Blogelina, some of you may know her as Tanya. She had a lot of good information on her blog about blogging. Profitable Blogging For Beginners was a workshop she started marketing in January. Although the class was reasonable, $35 at the time, I just couldn't swing it. Later, she offered the class at a much lower price and I jumped on it. With the class each student received a Free Year of Web Hosting through Go Daddy.

This plan is nothing to scoff at either:

Plan: Hosting - Web - Deluxe - Linux - 1 year (recurring)

Disk Space Usage: 0 MB of 150000.00 MB (0%)

Bandwidth Usage: Unlimited

Price per year-- $83.88

I had no idea what I was getting, still don't understand the full scope of it either. It maybe sufficient to say, I can host several domains on this hosting package.

So I got this great deal and someone was going to give me information about how to make money?! I will tell you I have only begun to scratch the surface of the information included in the class.

So, I had to figure out how to use this web hosting to host my blog. I suggest reading through some of these

  1. Once you set up your account, go straight to Join the Go Daddy Community.
  2. Here is the Get Started Guide, Setting Up Your Hosting Account.
    1. While I was getting the url for the link I found this, talk about EASY! Hosting Setup: Now 1 step! This would be so simple!
    2. Once you have the domain set you are ready to install your application. (Wordpress for this article)
  3. Free Applications is were you find WordPress, Joomla, etc.
    1. I had to talk to Tech Support twice to get this all set up.
      1. The first time the install had a problem and requested me to uninstall.
      2. Then I called to find out what to do, I was able to uninstall and start a new install immediately.
    2. I called after it had been 24 hrs, from the new install time, to find out how much longer it was to take.
  4. Once the install is complete, you are ready to get into your wp-admin panel and start blogging.

Something very important, I updated my wordpress application through the WP cPanel. If you do this you can not update on the hosting cPanel.

Once everything is installed and you can start making changes, you will want to choose your theme. I could not afford at this time to get a premium theme. Genesis and Thesis are the "Top" premium themes that I have heard of. You can do some searching on the install theme tab, it is a bit sensitive so I would suggest not using more than one or two search words.

In particular, I used 2 words in the search box.

LET THE FUN BEGIN!!!

Once you have all that set and you can access your WP administrator panel, you will be ready to download WP and prepare to import your blog. This is so easy it is ridiculous! I heard all these horror stories about how difficult it was to import comments and posts. This is the next part of the series.

A Journey From Blogger to WordPress

Image representing Blogger as depicted in Crun...

I started my blog with Blogger over a year ago. I still am happy with that decision. As I have mentioned before, I do not regret starting with Blogger. It is an ultra easy platform to learn.

Something I don't think the "pros" factor into their advice is we all don't start out knowing everything about codes, hosting, etc. The platform you start with has to be comfortable. Not unlike your favorite pair of jeans. So, if you are starting out with a bit of a learning curve find a platform that is comfortable and easy to use. Especially if you don't have about a $150-350 just to get online. Preset platforms take out the guess work.

I had an idea, boy haven't we all heard that before? To put my plan into action I needed somewhere to start. To get an opportunity to test the waters and start a Free blog, WOW! Just to be online with the opportunity to have others see what I've written, to most people this is Great! What I am getting to here, we all have started blogs with an idea, dream, etc in mind. What happens if it doesn't work? Can you afford to lose a couple of hundred dollars? I couldn't.

For Christmas, I purchased my domain name from Blogger. I decided that I was going to treat myself for my one year blogoversary. When I looked at some of the options, Blogger was the best deal, again! The option to purchase a domain name is in the Settings/Publish  tab when you are in your dashboard.

These are the options you receive from Blogger with your purchase:

  1. One year domain registration for $10
  2. Private domain registration to protect against spam at no extra cost
  3. Full DNS control and domain mangagement
  4. Automatically configured to work with Google services
  5. Email, calendar, instant messaging, web pages and more also at no extra charge
Now that said, somethings to know and think about:
  1. The purchase price and extras were worth it for me. If I had purchased these from GoDaddy it would have cost me $17 - $25. I have purchased 2 domains, one from eNom and one from GoDaddy. (Yes, purchasing a domain through Blogger was cheaper than buying direct.)
  2. Are you planning on self hosting? If you are, you will need to make changes to your DNS. The best part, customer service for the web host will help you redirect and walk you through. Some hosting services will do it all for you as part of your plan.
  3. Do you plan to change platforms? I did not find any good info to really get an understanding of WP.org. My move was more abrupt than I wanted, but it is getting there. The hard part of learning WP.org is there are differences that I had not worked with in blogger. These differences are the "silver cloud" of WP.org. IMHO, it would have been too overwhelming to have started with WP.org having no real background in blogging before I started blogging.

When you go through the process of making a purchase, with Blogger, you will be asked if you want to purchase through eNom or GoDaddy. It is your choice, there is not difference in your control just a different control panel (cPanel).

I personally do not see any advantage or disadvantage with either one. You access your DNS panel through Google Apps. Google Apps is a service offered to anyone, schools, businesses, etc. to organize communication. You get a custom email address: [email protected]

Although Google Apps and Google Accounts allow you to access several of the same Google products, they're different types of accounts. A Google Account is a unified sign-in system that provides access to a variety of free Google consumer products -- such as Gmail, Google Groups, Google Shopping List, Picasa, Web History, iGoogle, and Google Checkout -- administered by Google. Google Apps provides access to products powered by Google but administered by a your organization.

Some things to think about:

  1. If you purchase through GoDaddy, you will have to call and have them Help you redirect your DNS IF you are changing to . It automatically directs you to Google sites.
  2. If you purchase through eNom, you will have to call and have them Help you redirect your nameserver. Since I host through GoDaddy I called them to get the redirect info, so call your hosting provider.
  3. I had too many (A)Host and had to get a walk through on redirecting and deleting some of it, with both purchases.
  4. You also have to change the CName.
  5. Don't be afraid to call, this is what Customer Service is for.
If you are hosting with GoDaddy Community Help section is one area to become acquainted. Web Hosting Definitions has a limited list, but accessible to anyone.
A (Host) -- A records (also known as host records) simply point a domain name or sub domain to an IP address.
CNAME (Alias) -- CNAME records (also known as alias records) point a subdomain to an already existing A (host) record so that the subdomain resolves to the appropriate IP address.

I'm very happy with my choices. I hope this helps you make your decision making easier.

My next post in this series will be about moving my hosting from Blogger to GoDaddy.

I’m Impressed! Everyone Should Self-Host!!

I'm now so understanding of why everyone says, "You have to self-host your blog!"

I am officially being hosted by GoDaddy.com . Three weeks ago I bought my domain name, LOVE IT!! Sometime Friday, GoDaddy transfered my blog from Blogger. Everything seems so crisp and smooth.

If you would like to make the "Leap" also, check out GoDaddy.com The have some good deals right now on domain names, hosting and more.

I do have more things in store for the year. And I can mark off #17 off my list!

17.   I am going to figure out self hosting my blog.

I'm headed off to accomplish another load of laundry. Yes, I'm getting housework done and blogging! Oh, that's #5, not marking it off till the end of the year. I want to really get some consistent "flow" going first.

I hope you will follow along on this journey of mine.
Write me a comment, let me know how I'm doing or
leave a link to a post that you would like me to read.

Have a Wonderful Day!!

My Personal List of 20 Ideas To Make This Year My BEST Year

I did the same thoughtful recollections of 2010, that I have done many times before. I have had some real "doosies" as far as ups and downs in the past 5 years. All have been doable, none do I want to repeat. I wanted to put more purpose into this year, being that things have calmed down quite a bit.
I have spent some time reflecting on my New Year's Post: Ok, Are You Tired Of Hearing It Yet?
QUOTE:
  • I am looking forward to the chance to make another year better than the last.
  • I'm not going to tell you all the fabulous things I will promise you and me to do.
  • I do have some ideas that I hope you will like.
  • I do plan to keep blogging and hope to enrich your day.
  • I do plan to work on my bible study blog. Share the Bible with MusingMom
  • I do plan to write more on my spiritual blog. Another Day In Paradise
  • I don't have a bunch of lofty goals.
  • I do plan to work on my organization and family motto.
  • I do plan to accept that my oldest may be getting married sooner than I thought.
  • I do plan to keep being the same caring, hopeful woman I have always been.

This is a very doable list and I want to expand on it. Get to some details. In my next post: Just One Word For Last Year, I chose, Improved, as I re-read as the main one. This year is going to be even more improved with more Peace, Joy and Grace. I have lot of Hope that I can make it that much more improved that last year.

So, let me expand my first list:
  1. I will not say that I "will" do something, if I won't do it.
  2. I will remember my goals
  3. I will keep adding content to my blogs. I may be doing something to incorporate
  4. I will continue to pursue networking resources. hint: I have a Guest Post next week.
  5. I will continue to schedule my day, a little at a time.
  6. I will make a video for this blog.
  7. I will share some of my organization tips and tricks on coupons.
  8. I will share the system I use for bills, checkbook, accounts, etc
  9. I will read more of my bible study.
  10. I am going through my email accounts and removing myself from some of the lists I am on. (I am finding more inspiration from blogs, what I have learned to date, and simple trial and error)
  11. I am going to continue to sift through my Google Reader and share things I like on Buzz.
  12. I am going to continue to be the same caring, hopeful woman I have always been.
  13. I will find more ways to bring Joy into my life.
  14. I will find more ways to bring Peace into my life.
  15. I will find more ways to encourage God's Grace to be shown in my life.
  16. I will write a post about my experience with a Life Coach.
  17. I am going to figure out self hosting my blog.

If you are new to Stumble Upon, please check out this tutorial on how it works. To Stumble a post, just click I Like It on the Stumble Upon Toolbar.
To take part is simple.
  1. Add a link to a blog post that you would like people to stumble to the linky below. It *must* be a link to an actual post and NOT your main site. Please do not list giveaways.
  2. Stumble the 5 posts above your link. This way everyone’s posts will be stumbled. If you like you can stumble them all. The great thing about Stumble Upon is that it is fast and easy to do with the Stumble Upon toolbar. PLEASE DO NOT ADD YOUR LINK IF YOU AREN’T GOING TO STUMBLE ANY POSTS. This hop will only work if we all do our share.

Important Note: If you are the first person to Stumble a post, please take a minute and fill out the Stumble Upon review page. This is a one shot deal so if you don’t fill it out, that particular post will never get the same opportunity again.

Feel free to post about Stumble Tumble Tuesday on your blog and help us spread the word.

$9.50. It is simple and rewarding. I have done other things, SwagBucks, MyPoints, a Tweet
something, etc. This is actually getting me something for the time I want to spend. More time I could
get more, with the holidays, maybe more after the first of the year.

There are a lot of possibilities. Come on, click it, I know you want to!

PS I have some more fun things coming!

How To Create A Linky or Blog Hop Linky

the go to place for mom bloggers!

I haven't done but one other Writer's workshop at BloggyMoms, and I'm here to tell ya', they are fun to do.

This week is to write an instructional post to be added to the New How-To-Section on Bloggy Moms. I can share feeling of the new blogger trying to figure out how in the world do these bloggers do all these things. Scouring google trying to find out how to do all sorts of things.

How To Create A Linky or Blog Hop Linky

It is not very hard to do, but it can look overwhelming if you are just starting a blog. The Linky lists have been used for many things. I have used a linky for prayer request, prayer button and a blog hop linky's on my blog.

1. Go to Linky Tools and create an acct.

2.I believe it will put you at your dashboard, if not go there, these should be a link. This is what mine looks like.

3. Click on the menu with the green arrow "Create A New Linky". I chose the "Basic" because the thumbnails can make page loads long. If people are in a hurry they will give up. I'm guilty of that myself.

4. This is the next screen. Fill in the appropriate info.

5. Put the end date and time to 1:00am the following day. For an end date of Oct 23rd. Set the end date to stop the linky at 1am on the 24th. Then, click to continue to dashboard.

6. When you get here, you want to "Edit"

7. Next, you want to make it a Blog Hop.

Make sure all the info is correct. Check the box that says, "Is this a Blog Hop?" this will make the entry list sharable and will open a link on your post so people can add it to theirs is they choose.

8. Click on the update link on the bottom and it will bring you back to your dashboard.

9. If you have done it right it will look like "Blog Hop Realized Blessings" on mine.

10. Click on the the blue "Get Code" link. Copy and Paste to your post.

CONGRATULATIONS!! YOU'VE CREATED A LINKY!!

I hope this helps. If you would like to join in on the blog hop, it runs Friday and Saturday. There will be Guest Host Blogs and you can always find it on my blog, Just Another Day In Paradise
